Leaving the Hood!!
5 November 2006
Taryn was rescued from the street for a second time last night! She had escaped from her
zippered pet carrier on the way into the vet on the 9 October and had been living on the streets in
a new neighborhood ever since. A wonderful lady who lived in the home behind where Taryn had
given birth had been feeding Taryn & yesterday she called me to tell me that she had spotted the
kittens. A trap was set & at 7:30 last night, I received the phone call I'd been hoping for, telling
me that Taryn was in the trap. I rushed over to Balmain, jumped over 2 fences (they were in a
vacant property which I had prior permission from the owner to enter!) and retrieved the 2
remaining kittens! Taryn was very happy about being rescued and even ate the rest of the sardines
in the trap on the drive home! Thanks so much to all that helped me get Taryn home & in particular,
Helena, from the WLPA, who never gave up hope & continued to assist right til the end! All are
doing very well!
3 November 2006 - Zach #2 & Chelsea Rescued From the Street!!
I was finally able to trap Zach #2 & Chelsea last night! Chelsea was saved at about 2am, and Zach
#2 about an hour later! They are spending today at the vet with Mya. Zach #2, Chelsea & Mya
have all tested negative for FelV & FIV. Chelsea has a viral infection that will require a course of
antibiotics, but other than that all are in excellent health. The vet thinks Zach #2 & Mya are both
less than 1 year old.
And A Surprise - Zach #2 is a She & Mya is a He! So I will give them new names!! All 3 kitties still
need forever homes, so please email me if you would like to give them a forever home where they
can feel loved and safe!
MacKenzie Update
MacKenzie really enjoys domestic life and gets on so well with other kitties. He seems very
frightened of the "outdoors" and will be happy being an indoor cat forever! Please consider giving
him a forever home!
31 October 2006 - Mya Has Been Rescued From the Street!!
Mya was finally rescued tonight....after having passed on chicken and beef mince in the trap on many
nights, tonight she could not resist the temptation of the thin sliced roast beef on offer! Mya will
go to the vet tomorrow for desexing, microchipping, worming, defleaing, vaccination, FIV & FelV
testing & a general check up! After that she is on her way to foster care. Mya is new to the hood
& I know little about her, but I'm looking forward to finding out more. She has a beautiful grey
coat and at first glance you would think she had been a domestic kitty, but I'm not so sure she's
ever had a home. More will be known about her nature soon & I look forward to updating you about
her wonderful journey from the hood. If you think you may like to offer Mya a home, or have
questions about her, please email mya@kittiesinthehood.com
23 October 2006 - Benji & Zach are in Foster Care & Fluffy is on her
Way to her Forever Home!!
On the 20 October, Benji, Zach & Fluffy were de-sexed, vaccinated, micro-chipped, de-wormed,
de-fleaed and all are doing incredibly well!
Thanks to the World League for the Protection of Animals, Benji & Zach are in foster care, but
they still desperately need forever homes! Sadly, both Benji & Zach tested FIV+ (though they are
still very healthy and hopefully will be for many years to come), and will need kind, loving homes
where they are kept indoors and away from FIV- kitties.
Benji & Zach have recovered from their day at the vets & are doing incredibly well & are very
relieved to be off the streets. Foster care is only a temporary solution, so please consider giving
one of these kitties a loving forever home!
Fluffy is enjoying life indoors, though no doubt missing her siblings. She was the most
skittish/frightened of the black and white kittens, but she's already starting to relax & enjoy pats
& scratches!! She's not at all hissy and doesn't strike out. I think the transition to domestic life
will be quite easy for her. Thanks to a wonderful family who live in a smaller town in New South
Wales Australia, Beautiful and Fluffy are going to have wonderful lives! A custom built cat
enclosure with tunnels & runs is being built & they are even getting custom made litter trays!!
Don't worry, I'm pretty sure Fluffy's new people friends will come up with a much better name for
her!!
5 October 2006 - MacKenzie has come off the street!!
Last night MacKenzie was the first of the 10 kitties to come off the street. He seemed more
relieved than frightened.
MacKenzie was desexed, vaccinated and microchipped this morning!
2 October 2006 - Three weeks and cats are on their way out of the hood!!
Tomorrow, very exciting things are going to start to happen! On the webcam tomorrow night you
will see a humane cat trap out the front. I'm going to try to make sure I catch the right kitties by
placing the webcam near the entrance, and hopefully be able to set up a string to it so that I can
manipulate it from inside my place and so (hopefully) it only closes when the right kitty walks in!
I'm also going to try to do it when other kitties aren't around, so I don't scare them away from
the trap when it's their turn! Could be a challenge. My aim is to get two females off the street
(for obvious reasons!). After the kitty is in the trap, I will cover it with a blanket very quickly to
help relax her. Then she will probably spend the night in our kitty hotel...a plastic mesh tent big
enough to fit a german shepherd in laying down...it's called a "pup tent" and seems to have been
designed to take puppies on picnics or something, but works great for comfie cat accommodation,
large enough for blankets, a litterbox and food bowls. Next stop will be the vet for check-up,
desexing and everything else that needs to get done! Then later this week, the trap will be out
again, and a second kitty hopefully will be on her way to a better life!
When the vet says its ok, they will go to a wonderful foster carer from the World League for
Protection of Animals for whatever period of time the vet recommends to recover from their
desexing, then they will have their first ever airplane trip! Arrangements are being made for a Pet
Transport company to get the kitties there in kitty first class!
The kitties are going to the most wonderful home with a family that loves animals. A large cat
enclosure is being constructed for them by their new family with all sorts of cat runs & tunnels!
They will have a 9 month old kitten friend to play with too! I can't wait to post pictures of them in
their new home! I will also take pics every step of the way and post them so you can all share in
their journey!
This couldn't have happened without the help of so many people, particularly the lovely lady giving
them homes. She will take one kitten and one adult!!
The support these kitties have been receiving has been overwhelming and I'm sorry to those of you
that I haven't had time to get back to yet. The site has had over 9000 page views since I started
it 3 weeks ago and seems to be gaining momentum and I'm having a difficult time keeping on top of
everything that is happening, and what has been happening is very exciting! But I want you to know
that I so appreciate all your emails, offers of help & encouragement and very soon I'm going to put
up a thank you page thanking you all individually...and the list is getting long!!
Hopefully this page will soon be full of the stories of how all these cats got into loving homes!
These cats are desperate, if you can help, please let me know by emailing me at
kittyconcierge@kittiesinthehood.com
And don't forget to check back regularly for updates...hopefully there will be lots to come!
